Fungal Nail Treatment

What Is a Fungal Nail Infection?

A fungal nail infection (also known as onychomycosis) is a common condition that affects the toenails or fingernails. It occurs when fungi infect the nail through small cracks in the nail or surrounding skin.

Over time, the infection can cause the nail to become thickened, discolored, brittle, and distorted. Fungal nail infections are usually not serious but can become difficult to treat without professional care.

Signs and Symptoms

You may have a fungal nail infection if your nail becomes:

  • Yellow, white, or brown in color
  • Thickened or difficult to trim
  • Brittle, crumbly, or ragged
  • Distorted in shape
  • Separated from the nail bed
  • Painful or uncomfortable in shoes

The infection may start as a small spot and gradually spread deeper into the nail if left untreated.

Causes of Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal nail infections are caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist environments. Common causes include:

  • Walking barefoot in communal areas such as swimming pools or gyms

  • Sweaty feet or tight footwear

  • Minor nail injuries or cuts in the skin
  • Poor foot hygiene

  • Weakened immune system

The infection can also spread from athlete’s foot to the nails.

What to Expect From Treatment

Fungal nail infections often take time to fully clear because nails grow slowly.

Treatment typically involves:

  • Professional assessment of the infected nail

  • Regular reduction of thickened nails

  • Use of prescribed or medical-grade antifungal treatments

  • Advice on home care and prevention

Visible improvement may take several months as a healthy nail grows out.

Prevention Tips

You can help prevent fungal nail infections by:

  • Keeping your feet clean and dry

  • Wearing breathable footwear

  • Changing socks daily

  • Avoiding walking barefoot in public areas

  • Disinfecting nail clippers and foot care tools

  • Treating athlete’s foot promptly
