Nail Surgery

What Is Nail Surgery?

A verruca (also known as a plantar wart) is a small growth that appears on the soles of the feet. It is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which infects the outer layer of the skin through tiny cuts or breaks.

Verrucas often develop on weight-bearing areas such as the heel or ball of the foot, causing them to grow inward and sometimes become painful when walking or standing.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients recover quickly following nail surgery. You may experience mild discomfort once the anaesthetic wears off, which usually settles within a few days.

Aftercare advice typically includes:

  • Keeping the dressing clean and dry

  • Resting the foot for the first 24 hours

  • Wearing open or loose-fitting footwear

  • Attending follow-up appointments if required

Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Nail surgery is a quick outpatient procedure, usually taking around 30–45 minutes.

The process typically includes:

  1. Assessment and consultation

  2. Application of local anaesthetic to numb the toe

  3. Removal of the affected part of the nail

  4. Treatment of the nail root if required

  5. Sterile dressing applied to protect the area

You will be able to go home shortly after the procedure.
